In a report by the National Association of REALTORS® released in December 2025, it was highlighted that commercial clients are increasingly prioritizing building performance in their real estate decisions. Key areas of focus for these clients include operating costs, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency. According to NAR Deputy Chief Economist Jessica Lautz, sustainability is being acknowledged as essential by commercial real estate agents when it comes to purchasing, leasing, or selling properties. The report also revealed that properties with green building certifications exhibit higher property values and better energy efficiency compared to those without certifications. The trend of adaptive reuse is gaining momentum among commercial practitioners, who are repurposing vacant or underused properties into new spaces, often for residential purposes. This practice is seen as an innovative way to enhance housing supply and create new community spaces sustainably. In August 2025, NAR conducted a survey among its commercial-focused members regarding these trends.
