Avraham Eisenberg has been sentenced to 52 months in prison on child sexual abuse material charges by a US District Court in New York. This is unrelated to his involvement in the 2022 exploit that drained decentralized exchange Mango Markets of $100 million. The case was filed in April 2024 after his 2023 indictment on fraud for the Mango Markets exploit. Eisenberg was initially due to be sentenced in July 2024 but both cases have been suggested to be sentenced together in a consolidated proceeding. The fraud sentencing is still pending. The Mango Markets case highlights the increasing possibility of hackers and cyber exploiters being caught, plaguing the crypto industry. The Mango Markets exploit was through price oracle manipulation leading to the loss of $100 million in user funds. Eisenberg argued the exploit was done through legal means and stated he negotiated a settlement for the return of user funds after the exchange's insurance fund failed. He was arrested in Puerto Rico in December 2022, charged with commodities fraud and manipulation, and found guilty in April 2024. His defense argued it was a successful and legal trading strategy. Following his conviction, a motion for acquittal was filed in September 2024, heavily opposed by US prosecutors.
