In Seattle on August 28, 2025, there is a growing concern about a potential major earthquake, often referred to as "the Big One," in the Pacific Northwest. A recent PEMCO Insurance Poll conducted in Washington and Oregon shed light on the residents' preparedness for such an event. The poll revealed that 82% of Pacific Northwest residents believe they will experience a significant earthquake in their lifetime. Additionally, 76% anticipate substantial impacts on infrastructure, while 58% foresee being without essential services like power and water for at least a week. Surprisingly, despite this recognition of risk, only 19% of households claim to be "very prepared" for a disaster. A significant 42% admit to being somewhat prepared, and close to 39% acknowledge they are not prepared at all. This highlights a concerning disparity between perceived threat and readiness levels among residents in the region.
