A recent report reveals that the global carbon emissions have reached a record high of 36.8 billion metric tons in 2020, despite the pandemic-induced lockdowns reducing travel and economic activity. This marks a 2% increase from the previous year. The top three emitters contributing to this surge were China with 28% of the total emissions, the United States with 15%, and India with 7%. The report also highlights that the transportation sector was the largest contributor to the increase in emissions, accounting for 14% of the global total. Experts warn that urgent action is needed to curb these escalating emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
